A Marian's Guide to Academic Success

academic-success
Marian College offers a competitive nursing program which made us No. 9 among nursing schools in Southern California. Enrolling in this type of program is not an easy decision especially since most nursing students nowadays play multiple life roles that make going back to school more challenging. However, if your passion is to help others and if you possess a knack towards medicine and healthcare, this may be the right career path for you.

We have compiled practical tips to assist you in surviving the demands of the nursing program. We assure you of success if you follow being a true MARIAN!

Motivation is key! You enrolled in this program because you want to succeed as a professional nurse. Keeping yourself determined to finish the program is another story. When things do not seem to be going your way, look back and think about your reason for being here – it may be your spouse, your children, your parents, or any other person or reason that made you decide to be here. Think about your inspiration to put you back on track.

Attitude makes or breaks you! Keeping a positive attitude will facilitate the achievement of your goals. Think about passing and not failing. Visualize yourself as a nurse and work your way to realizing that vision.

Resiliency is bouncing back after a fall. You must realize that there might be times when you will get grades that fall below your standards. If you fail in one test, don’t be discouraged. Use the failure to propel you to make it better in the succeeding ones. As Ralph Waldo Emerson puts it: “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.”

Innovation will help you create your path to success. Creativity and going out of the box are important traits to make one succeed in the nursing program. If one study technique doesn’t work, explore other means of studying. Be inventive in finding ways to study and improving retention. The most bizarre and unusual codes in memorizing your coursework are helpful aids in retention.

Active Learning expands your knowledge. Keep in mind that learning does not stop within the four walls of the classroom. Be an active learner even after you leave your class. Sign-up for free online nursing journals that will help you expand your knowledge of the profession. Grab every opportunity to volunteer, which is a rich source of knowledge and experience. This is an opportunity to establish networks as well.

Never Give-up! Success is meant for those who persevere.
